Chapter Eleven

“Wow, how did you ever get into a place like this?” Ben said, a touch of awe in his voice.

His eyes were wide as they stepped into Au Soleil. It was elegantly appointed and dripped with style and class. Tobias had never been there either, so it was also a surprise to him. Jeremiah had really outdone himself this time.

“Just got lucky,” Tobias said, smiling as if he had everything under control the entire time.

Ben didn't have to know how frantic he'd been in trying to make plans the day of; he just needed to enjoy his special day.

“I'd say I'm the lucky one,” Ben said. “Thank you, Tobias.”

The atmosphere oozed refinement, and it was exactly what Tobias had hoped for. Burgundy walls, rich accents, and crisp, white cloths on every table, with a vase of expensive but tasteful looking flowers as the centerpiece. The host sat them almost immediately after they arrived, which considering the date, was a feat in and of itself, especially with the last minute reservation.

“Good evening, Mr. Sheffield and Mr. Giles,” the waiter said as he greeted them with wine glasses filled with water. Tobias had to admit, even he felt a bit like a celebrity with the over-the-top treatment by the staff. The look on Ben's face was priceless as he raised an eyebrow toward Tobias.

“It's our pleasure to be serving you this evening at Au Soleil,” the waiter continued. “We've heard quite a bit about you.”

“Why, thank you,” Tobias said, trying hard not to blush.

While yes, he was known in and around Orange County as the divorce attorney to the stars, and that did come with its own set of benefits, he knew this was all Jeremiah's doing this time. And for that, he was grateful.

“May I start you out with something to drink? A bottle of our specialty wine, perhaps?”

So far, this evening was far exceeding Tobias' expectations and Ben seemed very pleased himself. He was going to have to remember to do something extremely nice for Jeremiah.

“We don't —” Tobias started to say, but Ben stopped him.

“That would be lovely, what would you recommend?”

As the waiter read from the list of wines, Tobias watched Ben. When the waiter had finished, Ben chose a bottle of Opus One and sent the server off.

“Sorry, I just thought that since it's a romantic night out and all, we might as well go all out, right? I hope you don't mind.” Ben reached over and grabbed Tobias' hands from across the table.

“Not at all,” Tobias said, surprised, but amused at the same time.

“It's been a trying week; my nerves are shot,” Ben admitted. “I thought a little wine might take the edge off, help me relax.”

“You seemed perfectly relaxed this morning,” Tobias teased.

He ran his fingers over Ben's hand gently, admiring how soft and smooth they were. His hands were smaller than Tobias', and they fit perfectly within his own.

“Well, that's just what you do to me,” Ben laughed.
